The Bad Plus Long Beach Concert reviews
enjoyable but not fabulous
Taj Mahal opened the show and performed well, but there was very little variation from song to song. When I purchased the tickets, I expected to see Chris Isaak as well, but there was a lineup change. The Hollywood Bowl is a special place, and I couldn't wait for this event after missing live performances so much. The Bad Plus didn't seem fully invested in performing his classic songs. He kicked off the show by mentioning his new album and focusing on the new tracks. The newer songs were impressive, and his band was excellent. However, the reworked versions of "Moondance" and "Into the Mystic" didn't resonate with me; it felt like a half-hearted effort. "Gloria" was better received, though he skipped "Brown Eyed Girl." If he's truly moving on from his classic hits, perhaps he shouldn't include them in the setlist. This was my first time seeing him live and I was disappointed. It appeared that he wasn't interested in engaging with the audience, nor did he introduce his talented band. That's his prerogative, I suppose. Overall, I wasn't impressed with the performance. It was a pleasant evening, but in my opinion, it was a mediocre concert experience.
